Calamity from Storm

Hello out there! I am writing this on my phone so it will be brief.

The snow storm was terrible here and my neighborhood is severely damaged. Power is out and best case is for a Thursday restoration. I have doubts.

The power outages are so widespread gas is in major shortage and I witnessed a scary situation at a gas station tonight. Police sirens and fire truck horns run all night here and its not a good time.

Luckily I had trees removed a while back and my Generac generator which runs on a natural gas underground line has me powered up. Still no cable so no computer. It could be much worse and its not really cold yet so that helps.

So no real blog posts, but I am tweeting stuff. Hope everyone in this storm is doing ok.

Have a good night.

Good luck, man! That truly sucks. I can understand why the snow is not something you care for now. That's just terrible!

I'm still jealous of your Generac. Stay safe dude.

Hang in there, buddy. It could be worse. I mean, Al Gore might come to town, and then you'll really find out what global freezing, excuse me warming, is all about.

I finished Reckless Endangerment. It's a good book and an important read. I'll send you my review later in the week, after the thaw.

That is some strange weather you've had, it even made the news on our local station here in the midwest.

Take care!

We still have power and didn't even realize it was that bad for everyone else.

I'm glad you have that generator. It was a very good call to put that in.

Stay safe, buddy.

Thanks Everyone!! Word is thursday there will be power but I dont know how much I trust that. Things are fine here but still makes things difficult. Robotics training next two days, the ironic horror!

Robotics training, what the hell is that? They use robots to manipulate DNA now? That is some truly scary shit.

One thing I learned from reading Reckless Endangerment is this. Computers caused, or were at least the main contributor to, the financial crisis.

I know, I know, guns don't kill people. People kill people with guns. Same song, second verse, it doesn't get better before it gets worse.

After the tech explosion of the late 90s, banks had a new toy to play with. Computers and software programs which allowed them to approve loans in as little as 30 minutes, without ever even meeting the borrower! It's what drove the lending mania, the securitization process and the financial fraud that ultimately led to ruin. And it only took about ten years.

Of course, these computers were being used by dubious men with corrupt motives, but the point remains. Absent computers, none of this would have been possible.

I'm not saying we should ban computers any more than I would say we should ban guns. My idea of gun control is hitting the target you aim at. My idea of computer control is using one properly.

But these guys, these self-interested and corrupt bankers, politicians, brokers, traders, rating agencies, and regulators, used computers for their own devious means. They enriched themselves and bankrupted the entire globe.

It's a fascinating, albeit sad, story. And now they want to use robots to manipulate DNA? The mind shivers at the thought.
