And a video: I think I must have one. I do.

You know what that car looks like? The Green Hornet's ride, Black Beauty.

I miss that show. Batman was great, but it was largely camp, more satire than superhero. Batman did have the best villains though. Some of the best and most noted actors played villains on Batman.

The Green Hornet was darker and more real. Plus it had Bruce Lee as Kato. But it was the car that made the show. Better than the Batmobile, Black Beauty was what every kid in America wanted to drive. It was just so cool.

I didn't care much for the movie, but then most superhero movies are pretty sucky these days. The biggest mistake was they messed with the car.

They made the same mistake in some of the later James Bond films. What is Bond without a tricked out Aston Martin? The producers and directors admitted it when they said, we forgot about the car. Yeah, you did.

They messed with the Batmobile in the Batman movies too. It became overly gadgety and less realistic. And they messed with Black Beauty in the Green Hornet.

It's a sad comment on moden movies that they place too much emphasis on special effects and gadgetry, extravagance over substance, instead of just getting the story right.

Interestingly, of all the comic book heroes, Batman and the Green Hornet are really the only ones who don't have superpowers. Well, expect for maybe the Phantom and the Green Arrow. I'd have to go back and check, but most of the superheroes had some kind of unnatural superpower. Captain America had the super soldier syrum. Superman was an extraterrestrial. Spiderman got bitten by a radioactive spider. The Hulk was transformed by gamma rays. The Fantastic Four were bombarded by cosmic radiation. Thor was a nordic god. The Green Lantern had his magic ring. The X-Men were mutants, and so on.

Batman and the Green Hornet were just men. They were masked vigilantes who fought criminals. Batman's villains were a little over the top, the Joker, the Riddler, the Penguin, Catwoman (Julie Newmar was totally hot), Egghead, Mr. Freeze, King Tut, but they made for good comedy. The Green Hornet's villains were gangsters and underworld criminals, so they were more real.

Batman and the Green Hornet both had great rides. While cool, the Batmobile was a little too futuristic, especially for the 1960s. But Black Beauty was a real car. Yeah, it had all sorts of weapons, like one Bond's Aston Martins, but it was totally believable as a car.

If there's one thing producers and directors who want to make the next superhero movie should know, it's this. Flashy and fancy are out; real is in. Don't forget to focus on the car.
