Ha ha ha. GYC, I was wondering when you were going to get around to posting about this victory. I was going to send you a congratulatory email after them game, but I decided to let you bask in the glory for awhile. I imagine you've been as giddy as all get out for the last week. Now you know how I felt as a child when Staubach won the first Super Bowl for the Cowboys. That was so inspiring and gratifying for a young boy of 11, after he had watched the Dallas Cowboys come so close and fail ever since he was a baby.
This was an exciting game. It had everything, momentum swings, lead changes, incredible plays, a comeback from behind, and a goal line stand to win in the end.
People and pundits will question the play call by Seattle. Yeah, yeah, whine, complain. But it actually was a good play call. The problem was that it was oh so PREDICTABLE. It was so predictable that an undrafted rookie from a Dision II college, West Alabama, could figure it out and knew where the ball was going.
The practice squad had run that exact same play against him for weeks, and he knew what was coming. So he jumped the route and intercepted the ball, won the game. That goes to coaching. But it is significant that Tom Brady gave the MVP truck to him. That's what Brady does; he recognizes the players around him. He agrees to restructure his contract so that the team can afford more players.
Now there will be all this talk about who is the greatest quarterback, Montana or Brady. Um, Bradshaw is the only quarterback who won back-to-back Super Bowls twice. Otto Graham went 112-8 in his ten seasons in the NFL. It's ridiculous to compare quarterbacks from different eras. Different rules, different circumstances.
Bradshaw and Montana played in a time when the same players were around them all the time; there was no free agency or salary cap. Brady has worked in a different environment, with a rotating cast of characters every year. But he motivated them to win, which is the true sign of a leader.
The pundits say it's a quarterback's league. I say defense wins championships. You do know that the Patriots defense did not allow a 4th quarter touchdown in their last nine games, right? In the Super Bowl, Seattle's last four possessions went, punt, punt, punt, interception. And that was the game.
Yes, Brady drove his team to two touchdowns to take the lead in the 4th quarter. But it was the defense that won the game.
So say what you want about quarterbacks, they're only 1 of 11 on a team. Same with the defense and special teams. An undrafted rookie out of West Alabama won the Super Bowl. And Tom Brady, the MVP, gave him his truck. That says a lot about his character and commitment to the team. It's all about winning, after all.
As far as my Cowboys go, they're going to suck next season. Maybe go 10-6, win the division, go one-and-done in the playoffs. That has been their habit since 1996.
