Sunday Sirloin Skewers

If it's Sunday it usually means some food pictures!

Gulf Oil Spill
I watched the morning news this weekend and the coverage of the Gulf oil spill is almost non-existent. I saw quite a few observers trying to say that the coverage has been quiet as not to damage the president. Come On! Are you serious???!

What I think is that this spill is bad, like really bad. Just like any other major problem the play book calls for ignoring it and pretending it is no big deal. It does seem very annoying to me that every trick BP has to stop the leak always entails collecting the oil and hopefully still being able to use the well. This is absurd and could wind up being something with huge consequences later.

Sunday Sirloin Skewers
On tap for dinner today, Sirloin Tip Skewers!

I bought a package of tip steaks and cut them up into pieces. I marinaded the meat using Stubbs Beef Marinade for about 4 hours. Some whole mushrooms were on hand and also some cut up bell peppers and onions. A little EVOO coating and I was ready to start.

Here are the components pre-assembly:

Here are the completed skewers after sticking my hand quite a few times:

I cook these a little lower in temp, about 400 degrees, as not to blow away the veggies. About 15 minutes later they were about done on the Big Steel Keg:

Nice!

Meat was perfect and the mushrooms were very good. Is it really Monday tomorrow?

Have a good night.

  1. Now that's my idea of grilling, GYC! Man, that looks delicious.

I love sirloin tips. I use them to make strew, carne guisada, even chili. But I rarely skewer them. I'm beginning to think I might have to start soon though.

My brother is coming down in August to visit. So I'm going to have to stock my freezer. But I need to buy a new grill between now and then. What with all the rain we've had lately, my old has one has gotten rusty.

I'll look into one of those Big Steel Kegs, if they have them down here. The only thing is that it appears to have a wire grill. My old one has a thicker cast iron grill, which I like much better.

  2. Gawains,
The Keg comes with a super heavy duty cast iron grate as the main surface. If you notice in the picture there are two circular holes in the iron grate. Another chrome grate sits in those wholes for added cooking room. It's cool because it swings out of the way so you can access the lower one.

  3. Hmmm, yes. I did some research, but the only way to get one down here would be to order it. I'm not too wild about buying a grill without getting to look at it first.

My choices are pretty much limited to Home Depot and Lowe's. But according to preliminary research, they both offer the Bubba Keg on order, but not the Big Steel.

I'm looking at the Char-Grill Gourmet. It's not as fancy, but it suites my purposes. And it's 1/4 the cost, which means I can spend more money on steaks.

I'll have to go down and look at what they have to offer though. But I have time. Besides, it's my birthday tomorrow, and I'm in the mood for a nice personal gift.

  4. Well Well! Happy Birthday my friend! All my best, birthdays are a huge deal to me!

Any plans for a party? How does it feel to turn 21, now you can get adult beverages, HA!

The wife got me a Bubba Keg for Christmas but then I convinced another guy to get one and by then only the Big Steel Keg was avialable. He was set on the Bubba Keg, so he got a Steel Keg on Amazon and we swapped. The Steel Keg has some newer, better features so I was happy! I hope you can get a look at on eof these, I fully recommend them. I can take more detailed pics if you like if this interests you.

Disclosure: No affiliation with the Inzone company that makes the Keg, I just love mine!

  5. I'll have to go down to Home Depot and Lowe's to see what they have in stock. Maybe they have displays of the Bubba Keg. I don't know yet, but I'm about to find out.

For my purposes, since it's just me and my mom, I really don't need a big grill. I seldom have friends over, and my brother only comes down once a year. So I ordinarily only grill a sirloin or ribeye for me, and a smaller cut for her (she doesn't eat very much). Occasionally a chicken or burgers, maybe hot dogs. Sausage I usually pan fry in water (like my grandmother used to), and brisket I bake.

By the way, you really should look into getting one of those briskets from the New Braufels Smokehouse. Man, those are delicious. Just wrap it in foil and smother it with Texas Barbeque Sauce, then bake it at 200 for four hours. I suppose you could do that in you Big Steel, but it would be more trouble. But I'm telling you, once you've had a New Braunfels Smokehouse brisket, you'll never go back to another.

As for my birthday, no, I don't have any plans, other than work. We got a lot of assignments this month, much research and many price opinions to write. I had to go personally measure this one house because there were no records on it, and that took an afternoon. And I had to spend 10 hours this weekend sitting in an empty house that's going up for auction. Only a few people stopped by, so I just sat there and finished reading ECONned.

And I've got like six or seven houses that still need signs and lockboxes that I couldn't get to because of this stupid open house.

So, for my birthday, I'll probably take care of all that, come home, cook dinner, and watch the last episode of 24. Maybe have a Heineken or two. No cake for me!

Any chance you might agree to play "Birthday" by . . . The Band That Shall Remain Unnamed? Nah, I didn't think so. Just kidding, GYC, but I had to stick that needle in.

  6. Is that a real Beatles song? I'll tell you what, for your birthday I will do a special Monday night ONE SONG post and you can even pick a bug band song! This is a special offer and only because birthdays are big time to me. How about it?

I will be placing an Allen Brothers steak order soon, and I think I will add some items from New Braufels.

  7. I'm just giving you a hard time, GYC. Don't break your ban because of me.

But, yeah, that's a real song. It's off the White Album.

Oh, and the band wasn't named after a bug. It was named after a beat.

At the New Braunfels Smokehouse, the brisket is excellent. The Bismarkian sausage is superb. The smoked chickens are delicious. And the Comal County peppered bacon is out of this world. They also have a wide variety of other smoked meats, and assorted sides and desserts. The pecan pie is to die for, but the divinity will send your wife to heaven. Trust me on that.

  8. Gawains,
should you be disclosing an affiliation??? LOL

  9. I have no affiliation with the New Braunfels Smokehouse.

I'm just saying they have the best smoked meats on the planet.

  10. Looks like another successful smoked/grilled meat weekend! Had some visitors this weekend so I missed Friday night fun-ness, so I'm a little late to say thanks for the shout out. You have very eclectic taste in music. I appreciate that.

  11. Oh Soleil,
My dear, thanks for stopping in. I was a bit worried about you this weekend, but so glad to see ya!

    All my best fine lady!

  13. Dave,
    lets not get carried away!

Not that I ever see that kind of stuff, but Seka is the gold standard, HA!

    Dude,
Steel Keg is the way to go.

  14. Your Monday prediction was off mark GYC. Glad I didn't act on it.

And that's the whole problem with making predictions. It seems like it should be a quite easy matter for a fully engaged and functional mind, but it's closer to impossible to get right. There's definitely a degree of randomness to the whole thing.

  15. Crisis,
Yeah, I expected some kind of headline event over the weekend. I am glad you didnt act on it either! A down Monday on Wall Street is as rare as honest politicians. Turnaround tuesday is upon us.
