It looks like a three day weekend as a vacation day will be spent Monday to be able to celebrate the Superbowl in style Sunday night!
It seems Massachusetts will be spared the big east coast snow storm and that is a very good thing!
Jobs Number
I am not going to spend much time on this garbage can. Even now, almost 10 hours after the release of the data, some of the best analytic writers are still trying to figure out what the hell the story is. There were revisions and changes to basically everything and then changes to revisions and revised revisions. Whatever.
Short story: More jobs were lost last year than estimated and job creation is not happening as of yet to any degree. There, simplified it for you.
Late Day Market Fireworks
After trading ugly all day the indices had a monster rally ending just positive for the day and saving "DOW 10,000" for another weekend. Whuppity Do.
Reasons? Do we really need any? Take your pick:
- JP Morgan guns the market right into the close (complete with Bloomberg Terminal screen shot of never ending buy orders)
- Short squeeze because nobody wants to be short over the weekend when, as predicted here, the Euro leaders meet to craft a plan to bailout Greece. I may change my header to read: "EconomicDisconnect: Read Tomorrows Paper Today".
Good Read
Mish has a compilation of the salaries for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) employees who strive to bring you light rail service in San Francisco for a minimum 80,000 dollars a year:
Rapid Transit Salaries
Sick joke but it's not.
Must Read
The Automatic Earth is always a must read for me, but today's missive should be required reading for everyone and I would suggest you do take a minute for this gem:
Deep Blue Friday?
Wow, just wow.
That's about it, I think an extended entertainment section is just what the doctor ordered.
Friday Night Entertainment
"Hey is that freedom rock?"
"Yeah Man!"
Well, turn it up Man!"
An early infomercial!
Funny Pictures
I had a high powered intellectual discussion last night on the merits of the term "Owned" versus the new era term "Pwned". It put me in the mind of this picture:
Too funny, no, three funny!
I think cats and a pug in a tub could be a recipe for a serious disaster:
see more Lolcats and funny pictures
Man they look SOOOOO happy! The dog will be happy to just get out, the cats will plot revenge. Cats rule.
Book Passage
This one is from a short story not a novel;
"But it's not just the weapons they have. It's the machines that let them see and talk to each other from far away; the machines that do their reckoning for them; their recorders and everything that has to do with them. From what they say of their medicine, I'm almost tempted to believe you and think they are wizards-they actually know what causes their diseases, and how to cure or even prevent them. And their farming: this planet is far more crowded than any I've ever seen or heard of, but it grows enough for all these humans."- Harry Turtledove's "The Road Not Taken"
Togram sadly waggled his ears. "It seems unfair. All that they got, just by not stumbling onto the hyperdrive."
"They have it now," Ransisc reminded him. "Thanks to us."
The Roxolani looked at each other, appalled. They spoke together: "What have we done?"
Film Clips
Filling up your netflix box!
A great scene from one of my favorite films, enjoy the moonrise in "Joe Versus the Volcano":
Very Nice.
Your economic recovery dollars at work, ask "What's wrong with the street?" in "Falling Down":

Rock Blogging
Gypsy, sittin' lookin' pretty- Def Leppard
The broken rose with laughin' eyes

I will open the show with a song I heard on Monday night in the closing credits of a movie and when I heard it I was like "I remember that song!". Enjoy John Cafferty and "Voice of America's Sons":
Great stuff.
The perfect song for a Friday Night? How about Kim Wilde and "Kids in America"?:
Requests?
When reader Watchtowr requested "The Blowers Daughter" I thought he was trying to make the blog R rated! Instead enjoy the very nice song by Damien Rice that I had bever heard before:
Great request!
Another song I had never heard before was on tap from reader Gawains so take a trip with David Bowie and "Diamond Dogs":
Interesting!
One more? Two more? Ok, two more because two is better than one. Two for one? Hells yes!
Take a listen to a softer but no less powerful side of Iron Maiden with "Children of the Damned":
Wicked!
Last call! Have bail money ready? Yes? Then let's go.
Let us return to the 1980's when everything was great, the sun was always shining, and the rock and roll was so good you wanted to pass out! Here is Cinderella with "Nobody's Fool" in crystal clear HD no less:

Have a good night.

You had a bad day too huh?
Misery must love company. Mine was HORRIBLE.
How about some "American Idiot" by Green Day for next week. I know I already blew this week.
Don't worry, Get. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.
Yeah. right. sure.
I am shocked--shocked!--you never heard Bowie's Diamond Dogs, GYC. It's a good album. But that clip doesn't include Future Legend, which precedes the song.
"And in the death
As the last few corpses lay rotting on the slimy thoroughfare
The shutters lifted in inches in Temerance Building
High on Poacher's Hill
And red, mutant eyes gazed down on Hunger City
No more big wheels
Fleas the size of rats sucked on rats the size of cats
And ten thousand peoploids split into small tribes
Coverting the highest of the sterile skyscrapers
Like packs of dogs assaulting the glass fronts of Love-Me Avenue
Ripping and rewrapping mink and shiny silver fox, now legwarmers
Family badge of sapphire and cracked emerald
Any day now
The Year of the Diamond Dogs
This ain't rock n roll
This is genocide!"
Bowie is a great artist. I'd rank The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars as one of the best albums of all time. Young Americans as well, although John Lennon played on that album so you probably wouldn't like it so much, but it really is very good.
Great article by The Automatic Earth, by the way. It seems we're heading headlong toward the post-apocalypse. Hence, the above.

I'm glad you think that conversation about 'pwnd' was "high powered intellectual". Gee, you are easy to impress, ha ha!
Nice entertainment round up!
C-T,
anything you want anytime is on my dime. Never too late. And yes this week was THAT bad and I had to say good bye to plenty of friends so that sucks. But job growth is here, if you work at Burger king.
Gawains,
really I had never heard that song.
Watchtower,
nice!
Sonic,
great conversation takes many forms. A hip mama that can relate to the kids is indeed high powered!
If you like we can discuss the issue with tipler cylinders and their effect on time travel possibilities? What about genetic drift and the rise in autism?
Wow,
nobody watched that moonrise scene?
You are missing something.
The above should read *Temperance* Building.
5 Reasons Why the Saints Will Win, by Don Banks.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/don_banks/02/05/saints/index.html
Hmmm. Karma. Turnovers. Pass rush. More leg (younger kicker). They're due.
I definitely agree with these points. The Saints are playing with a sense of purpose forged with not only a city but a state and an entire region that has embraced them. That's powerful.
They have a ball-hungry defense and a punishing pass rush. Forget sacks. Pressure is what it's all about. Quarterbacks, even the best, will make mistakes more due to pressure than they will because of sacks.
Kickers are a strange breed. It's all mental with these guys. But leg strength is important as well. With the game on the line, for a long field goal, a 23-year old has an advantage over a 42-year old.
I don't know if the Saints are "due" a title--you could say the same about every team that has never won one--but I do know they are determined to win. I remember when the Buccaneers, once the most ridiculed and pathetic team in the league, played in their first Super Bowl. They dominated. The Saints have a similar history, with fans wearing bags over their heads. A victory will go a long way toward removing those ill-begotten memories.
Two things Banks does not address are coaching and quarterbacking. Sean Payton has worked miracles in New Orleans, and his emotional leadership and aggressive play calling has motivated the players to will themselves to win. Drew Brees, who a few years ago was given up for dead coming off of shoulder surgery, isn't playing for a ring, he's playing for redemption. That's inspirational.
But the main reason why I want the Saints to win is because there is nothing I would enjoy more than seeing the look on Jerry Jones's face when the coordinator he let go ahieves what the coordinator he brought in has not, and I believe can not. Delicious irony, I love it.
"nobody watched that moonrise scene?"
Au contraire, that's one of my wife and I's favorite movies, and it is an excellent scene!
I also liked the scene where the lightbulb is flickering over Tom's desk : )
In the office where my wife formally worked, the light started doing the exact same thing over her desk.
When she came home in the evening and told me, we started laughing till tears came down our faces because of the movie (plus she was in a tiny office and hated that job).
Way off topic but Danica Patrick is entering NASCAR.
Gawains,
I will have a full preview post up later but my quick thoughts:
-Only reservation is the lack of big game experience for the Saints
-Colts are way too favored to me; 4.5 points and Dungy says they will win easy? OK
Watchtower,
Yes the wife and i love that movie as well! My favorite is the luggage scene when Joe buys the trunks, the salesman is just speaking on many levels at that time.
Good luck to Danica, NASCAR needs something to bring excitement back. I hope she does well but it is a steep learning curve. I wish Kevin Harvick had gone to Tony Stewart racing.
An absolute must read article and must see video, via the Mises Institute.

It's Saturday, it's nasty outside, and I'm stuck in the house for now.
Here is a picture of Watchtower's Bullitt on the day I brought it home:

Have you ever sat around the house wondering what Watchtower looked like when he was 21 years old and hungover from New Year's Eve celebrating?
Of course you haven't but here it is anyway:

Picture was taken by my soon to be wife in downtown St Louis, MO on Jan. 1st 1986.
That was my 1972 Pontaic Firebird I was leaning on.
Pictures are being hosted by a car forum I'm on.
Gawains,
The mises always has great stuff I will check it out.
Watchtower,
Have you always been in posession of awesome cars?????? Thanks for making me totally jealous! Is that firebird the one from "American Beauty"??
Any engine pics of that bullit? Cool forum can non members look around?
Is that firebird the one from "American Beauty"??
Pretty close, the one in AB was a 1970 model (low back seats and other nuances I won't bore you with), but basically the same.
"Cool forum can non members look around?"
I believe so, but to post you have to register.
Here is a pic of my Bullitt's engine:

I don't know if your interested, but here is a picture of my brother's 1970 Firebird we are restoring before we started working on it(along with my Bullitt in my driveway).
We just recently got his 455 engine back from the machine shop that we are going to put into it...woo hoo!

"I don't know if your interested.."
Um....YES!!!
I used to be a total gearhead you now.
The green 70 firebird looks in solid shape and should be fun to redo. 455, now that is plenty of muscle.
The Bullit engine pic is insane!
-K&N intake filter, very nice
-twin throttle bodies up front that lead into....
-That composite manifold looks great. The runners look like black mambas! (best intake manifold ever was on the 80's L-98 motor form chevy IMO)
-Strut brace for the extra torque is a good idea
Very sweet indeed, thanks for the treat.
